Today i met a marvellous Banksia,
Banksia is a genus of around 170 species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, not sure which species she is.

Signs of autumn all over, the light is so soft and everything is shimmering.

After two years of war it feels like hope again.
With my art I’m trying to create safe places, shelters, nests, hiding spaces where no harm can be done.
The black angels are messengers of love and light, the snakes are a reminder to of protection and for shedding what isn’t useful anymore.
I wish to shed fear, hatred, pain of loss.
I pray for everyone to be safe and protected.

This is a flower of Aristolochia gigantea or ‘Giant pelican flower’, dangling majestically from the neighbors fence.

Columbarium
Ancient rock-hewn chambers filled with rows of small niches, carved side by side and stacked above one another like a giant dovecote.

🕊️ In Roman times, some columbaria were used for burying cremated ashes and rituals, while in our region many served a simpler, earthy purpose — raising doves for food, fertilizer, and even sacred symbolism.

⛰️ Standing inside today feels like touching a quiet memory carved in stone, where life, death, and renewal once intertwined

Things I learned from the squill (Drimia maritima) this autumn:

It takes me into processes of depth beneath the soil, drawing me inward into caverns that are like storehouses of nourishment. With its help one can endure even ten years without water—and still rise again.

No one sees what happens below the surface. There are no leaves to announce its coming, only a single serpent-like stalk that opens into white stars which drive the bees wild. Only after the famous flowering stalk has withered do the leaves emerge, in that very specific bluish-green.

In the hidden dark, things are always happening.

The squill reminds me of the ouroboros and of solar eruptions on the sun’s surface—
a circular, repetitive process, an intense inner force that breaks through the crust of hard earth, rupturing and releasing bubbles of stagnation, guilt, and shame.

There is no self-pity in times of drought and cracked earth. There is a willingness to grow even so. It happens of itself—an action without action.

It teaches a precise rhythm of sprouting and withering on the surface, while in the depths the heart never dries.

Even when unheard, it lives and strengthens, like Persephone discovering miracles in knowing who she is and how to emerge, growing into the one she must become.

Within its bulb lies a poison that stimulates the heart, and tiny calcium crystals embedded in its tissues intensify the passage of the toxin in the blood of animals. Animals have learned—few dare to touch it. From this comes the ancient use of the squill to mark graves and to separate plots of land: squills will bloom peacefully for years, unharmed by grazing creatures.

In Shamanism we get messages from nature all the time - I suddenly noticed A baby chameleon. scrolling back the photos i understood she was appearing in a photo before I even noticed her.. She deepened the sense of the great things that happen unseen—layer upon layer of camouflage, of ongoing action: expansion and growth, even in the harshest possible conditions.

The cypress is inseparable from the theme of mourning and immortality. In Greek mythology, the story of Cyparissus tells of a boy who, in despair after killing his beloved stag, was transformed by Apollo into a cypress tree — condemned to eternal grief. This myth firmly established the cypress as a funeral tree.

The Romans adopted this symbolism: cypress branches were placed at the entrance of homes where a death had occurred, and groves of cypress trees lined necropoleis as a marker of sacred ground. Throughout the classical world, the cypress was dedicated to gods of the underworld and the eternal soul.

In Persian poetry and gardens, the tree gained another layer of meaning: upright, slender, unbending, it became a metaphor for spiritual nobility, divine beauty, and eternal life. The legendary Sarv-e-Abarkooh in Iran — believed to be over 4,000 years old — is celebrated as both a living monument and a spiritual witness across millennia.

Description: A tall, evergreen conifer, often exceeding 25 m. Its narrow, flame-like crown, aromatic scale-like leaves, and small rounded cones have made it an emblematic tree of cemeteries, temples, and sacred landscapes.

Longevity: Some cypress trees are thousands of years old — such as the famous Abarqu Cypress in Iran, estimated at over 4,000 years.
Since antiquity, cypress leaves and cones have been valued in folk medicine across the Mediterranean and Near East. Preparations were used as astringents, to slow bleeding and relieve hemorrhoids, and as remedies for coughs, bronchitis, and laryngitis. Decoctions of bark and leaves soothed toothaches, fevers, and skin irritations.

Modern phytochemical studies confirm many of these properties: essential oils from the leaves and cones contain compounds with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even antiviral activity. Among the Aztecs in Mexico it was called Toloache and considered a sacred plant of the gods, used in rituals of divination and love.
In Nahuatl mythology it was dedicated to Xochipilli, the god of flowers, love, and the arts.
Indigenous peoples of northern Mexico saw the white flower as a “gateway to dreaming,” a tool for prophecy and spirit communication.
In shamanic vision: the glowing whiteness at night was called “the breath of the moon” – opening doors to the subconscious.
In Wiccan and later Pagan traditions, Datura was regarded as one of the “witches’ plants” enabling astral travel.

🐍 Guardian of Gates – she wraps you in a serpent’s skin of protection, keeping away hostile spirits and guiding you safely through hidden realms.

🔮 Bearer of Visions – shamans used her to see what is lost, to speak with spirits, to travel in the astral. Her gift is the blessing of clear sight into what is concealed.

🌑 The Poison Wisdom – she reminds us that death and life are intertwined; danger itself can be sacred. Her power is the courage to stand in the liminal space where transformation is possible.

I made this illustration while learning on her magical power:
Datura is among the most poisonous plants that exist on this Earth. Every part of the plant is deadly toxic and contains alkaloids (hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopolamine) that cause severe hallucinations and death. Period.

Datura grows on a wide range of soils: in abandoned lots, roadsides, ruins, along polluted stream banks, and in disturbed habitats.
The concept of “disturbed habitats” is interesting – disturbed soils, places that refuse to align with the existing order, places where disruption or breakdown has occurred. Sometimes I feel that this entire land is one vast disturbed habitat, a place struck by a terrible fracture.

Who is Datura, arriving in her dignity and majesty to settle upon this broken, harsh soil that clearly is unwell? She comes to decipher the disturbance. She is the first to grow in the ruins (another poetic concept), where everyone else has abandoned, no one dares to approach, no one withstands the toxicity – but she does. She is a queen, she carries venom, and though she hails from another distant continent, she arrives all the way here.

One can never say enough about plants that contain poison. A poisonous plant is like a snake or a scorpion – it embodies the mystery of life and death within itself, and offers a choice. The secret lies in the right measure: the threshold between life and death, between poison and medicine. How do we learn that measure? It takes many lifetimes to understand it. To stand in that precise place, between life and death – the place we come from and the place we return to – is to hold the ability to move backward and forward in time.

In Datura there is an essence of both light and darkness. This is how she protects herself, and this is how she blesses us. Her power radiates from her very presence, even from speaking about her – there is no need to consume her. It is dangerous to touch her, let alone to ingest her in any form. Only healers of great power are granted permission to work with her.

The concept of “disturbed habitats” is interesting – disturbed soils, places that refuse to align with the existing order, places where disruption or breakdown has occurred. Sometimes I feel that this entire land is one vast disturbed habitat, a place struck by a terrible fracture.

Who is Datura, arriving in her dignity and majesty to settle upon this broken, harsh soil that clearly is unwell? She comes to decipher the disturbance. She is the first to grow in the ruins (another poetic concept), where everyone else has abandoned, no one dares to approach, no one withstands the toxicity – but she does. She is a queen, she carries venom, and though she hails from another distant continent, she arrives all the way here.

One can never say enough about plants that contain poison. A poisonous plant is like a snake or a scorpion – it embodies the mystery of life and death within itself, and offers a choice. The secret lies in the right measure: the threshold between life and death, between poison and medicine. How do we learn that measure? It takes many lifetimes to understand it. To stand in that precise place, between life and death – the place we come from and the place we return to – is to hold the ability to move backward and forward in time.

In Datura there is an essence of both light and darkness. This is how she protects herself, and this is how she blesses us. Her power radiates from her very presence, even from speaking about her – there is no need to consume her. It is dangerous to touch her, let alone to ingest her in any form. Only healers of great power are granted permission to work with her.

I’m working on an Art project in a forest that was burned in the war, the fire spread in the part where it was hit by rockets or missiles.
There are many ill and dying trees, some were dripping with resin in a way iv never seen before.
I know the forest will heal and i know we will too.

Yucatec Mayan name – wichuri xtohkuh – “in the direction of the gods”

Datura, from the beloved nightshade family (Solanaceae), is botanically recognized for its large, fragrant white trumpet flowers and soft spiny seed pods. Every part of this plant contains potent tropane alkaloids — scopolamine, hyoscyamine — making it dangerously toxic if misused.

Magically, Datura is revered by many Indigenous cultures as a plant spirit that opens the gateway between worlds. In traditional shamanic paths of the Americas, it is used to induce deep visionary states, dream walking, and out-of-body flight — but always under the strict guidance of experienced healers.
